How to be more Consistent in Football

updated on April 23rd, 2024

Most football players have had some great performances in their playing careers. But only a small percentage manage to keep up a great performance consistently throughout the season.

But that’s exactly what scouts and coaches are looking for: players they can rely on to perform at a high level week in, week out.

And with these 3 tips, we’ll help you become one of the few footballers with the knowledge and ability to do so!

1) Take care of your body & mind

Let’s start with the simple but often actively ignored problem when it comes to consistency: your mind and body.

If you eat unhealthy foods, go to bed at 3 am before the match, are hungover (to all 18+/21+ players reading this), and are mostly thinking about something other than the match, how can you seriously expect your body and mind to perform to the maximum?

If you want to perform consistently at the highest level, you need to allow your body to get itself in the optimal state to do so. So make sure you follow a balanced and nutritious diet, get enough rest and sleep, go to bed on time every day, and take the recovery of your body and mind seriously.

It also helps to develop a pre-match routine that allows you to prepare for the match mentally, increase your focus on the match, and block out negative thoughts.

This way, you can go into the game with the same level of energy, sharpness, and positive mindset every week!

2) Maintain High Standards in Your Training

The next important step you need to take is to ensure high intensity in all your training sessions. Only if you practice your abilities in a match-realistic environment will they become so intuitive to you that you’ll also be able to perform them in an actual match.

If you constantly train only half-heartedly and without any opponents, how can you expect to perform once you’re in the game with a defender on your back and you’ll only have one second to execute your move?

So take your training as seriously as your matches. Come prepared, get enough sleep the night before, and give it your all. Believe us, once you get consistent in maintaining high standards in your training, you’ll see the same in your games!

3) Develop a Strong Mentality

If you follow these first two steps, you’ve already done more than 90% of all amateur players and have given your body and mind all the tools they need to perform to the best of your abilities.

But this by itself is not a fail-safe system.

Here’s why!

You’ve probably already experienced this situation in a match yourself. You start well into the game, maybe already had some positive actions in the match, and you’re feeling great.

But then there’s this one situation, one mistake, one comment from an opponent or a fan, the negative self-talk kicks in, and your confidence goes down the drain. You’re afraid to make another mistake; maybe you’ll even get nervous when someone passes the ball to you.

If you’re in this stage, it’s impossible to perform to the best of your abilities.

That’s why it’s so important to build strong self-confidence so you’re not even affected that much if you’re making a mistake or by any external circumstances.

Additionally, you should develop a strategy that allows you to build up your confidence during the match. An effective technique for this is, for example, to fall back to the basics. Simple passes, simple runs, simple commands.

Get in those touches and mini-success moments, and you’ll notice how your confidence increases with every touch! And after a few minutes, you’ll be back to your former state and ready to deliver once again the impressive performance you’re known for!

So get started with these tips right away and show the world what you’re capable of, consistently for weeks, months, and years! Only then do you truly enable yourself to get picked by coaches, scouts, and your national team.

But now it’s up to you. In our experience, 99% of you who read this article will be inspired for a few moments, but then they’ll go right back to their normal routines.

Not because they want to, but because they lack the discipline to make the hard decisions and finish what they’ve started.

If that sounds like you, get yourself the Train Effective app and build the discipline and habits necessary for consistent performance on and off the pitch!
