Stars generally represent titles won, but not all teams follow the same guidelines.
For international teams, one star represents one World Cup, so Brazil have five stars as they have won 5 World Cups. However some international sides may also have a star if they have won an AFCON or Asia Cup title.
Meanwhile in club football, it will vary from league to league, a country’s governing body will grant teams the right to wear stars for winning a certain number of league titles.
In Italy, Holland, Portugal, Sweden and Norway, clubs will be given a star if they win 10 league titles.
For example, Ajax have 3 stars for their 35 league titles, if they get to 40, they’ll have 4 stars.
In Germany, clubs are given a star after specific milestones in league titles, going from 3 to 5 to 10 to 20 and so on.
However in the Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1, no clubs will wear stars no matter how many titles they win.
