Why Do Goalkeepers Wear Different Colours?

updated on January 26th, 2023

3 mins read

Goalkeepers wear different colours than the outfield players so that it’s easy to distinguish them, which is important for several reasons.

Firstly for identification ?‍♂️ , for teammates to know where their goalkeeper is without confusion, which is vital when defending, especially in set piece situations.

Secondly for safety and protection ⛑️, goalkeepers will often dive, slide and make physical contact during games, the different coloured kits helps opponents identify them and minimise any unnecessary or dangerous collisions.

And lastly to help in the offside rule, it's important for the linesman to identify where the last defender is standing to know whether an attacker is offside or not, so a different colour kit helps the linesman avoid any confusion between defender and goalkeeper.
