Although it’s not something fans love to see, and doesn’t come with a great deal of sportsmanship, faking injuries and diving has become a part of modern football.
Firstly, to win fouls or penalties. Players will often dive or over exaggerate a tackle to convince the referee to blow their whistle, and it’s a tactic which often works.
Secondly to waste time, If your team is 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go, you’ll naturally do anything to ensure the opposition don’t get an equaliser. Wasting time isn’t a pretty way of doing that, but it can certainly be effective, and even some of the greatest managers advise their players to do so.
And lastly to take the sting out of the game. If a player feels like their opposition are building momentum and are threatening to score, they may go down pretending to be injured, so that the game has to be paused and the opposition’s momentum is halted.
So although it’s not a graceful part of the sport, it can often be a good trick to help your team get over the line.
